La Gomera Island

La Gomera is an island of the Atlantic Ocean that belongs to Canary Islands. It has a surface of 369.76 km². It is the sixth most populated island of the Canary Archipelago.

It is also known as the Columbian island because it was the provisioning place of Cristobal Colon before departing to the New World in 1492. The main and capital city is San Sebastian de La Gomera.

The island has many and variated monuments, natural and rural parks, which are protected by the Government of Canary Islands. We can highlight some of them like The National Park of Garajonay, The Integral Natural Reserve of Benchijigua, The Special Natural Reserve of Puntallana, The Natural Park of Majona, The Rural Park of Valle Gran Rey and The Protected Landscape of Orone, among others.

La Gomera has a natural jewel from the Tertiary Period: the laurel forest. Such subtropical vegetation is formed by a wide variety of trees, which conserve their foliage throughout the year because of the humidity and the mild temperatures.

The island has hundreds of plant and animal endemisms, which makes it to be rich in biodiversity. We can highlight some animal endemisms like the giant lizard of La Gomera.

In 2012, UNESCO declared La Gomera a Biosphere Reserve.

We can highlight some parties like the Patron Saint of the island, The Virgin of Guadalupe, whose celebration brings together thousands of pilgrims who go to the Descent of the Virgin that takes place every 5 years from the hermitage in Puntallana until the capital city.

The Gomeran Whistle, which is an old way of communication of the aborigines of the island, is an authentic whistle language, with which it is possible to communicate from far distances of approximately 3 kilometres using sonly the mouth and fingers. It was declared Heritage of Humanity. This language is learnt at schools around the island until the compulsory secondary education, when it is learnt jointly with the Spanish language and Literature.
